EV Insurance 2026: What Has Changed?
Electric mobility in Austria is growing rapidly – and so are the requirements for car insurance for electric vehicles. Since April 2025, an important change applies: EVs are no longer exempt from the motor-related insurance tax.
Important Change Since April 2025
Electric vehicles must now also pay the motor-related insurance tax. Depending on the vehicle, this means €300-600 additional costs per year.

The New EV Tax: How It's Calculated
The motor-related insurance tax for electric vehicles consists of two components:
Calculation Formula
| Component | Calculation | Example Tesla Model Y |
|---|---|---|
| Power Component | Based on continuous power (kW) | ~200 kW → approx. €280/year |
| Weight Component | Based on max. permissible weight | ~2,000 kg → approx. €200/year |
| Total | Power + Weight | approx. €480/year |
Tax Examples for Popular EVs
| EV Model | Continuous Power | Weight | Estimated Tax/Year | |----------|------------------|--------|-------------------| | Tesla Model 3 | ~150 kW | 1,800 kg | €350-420 | | Tesla Model Y | ~200 kW | 2,000 kg | €450-550 | | VW ID.4 | ~125 kW | 2,100 kg | €380-450 | | BMW iX3 | ~150 kW | 2,200 kg | €420-500 | | Hyundai Ioniq 5 | ~160 kW | 1,900 kg | €400-480 | | Skoda Enyaq | ~132 kW | 2,000 kg | €370-440 |
What to Look for in EV Insurance
Electric vehicles have special insurance needs. Pay attention to these EV-specific coverages:
| Coverage | Why Important? | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Battery Protection | Battery is most expensive part (€10,000-20,000) | Essential |
| Animal Bite Damage | High-voltage cables are expensive to repair | Highly recommended |
| Charging Cable Theft | Mobile charging cables cost €300-800 | Recommended |
| Wallbox/Charging Infrastructure | Wallbox damage can be expensive (see subsidies) | Optional |
| Cyber Protection/Hacking | EVs are connected and hackable | Premium tariffs |
| Roadside Assistance for EVs | Special towing when battery is empty | Recommended |
EV Insurance: Liability, Partial or Comprehensive?
Our Recommendation by Vehicle Age
| Vehicle Age | Recommended Coverage | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| 0-3 years (New car) | Comprehensive (Vollkasko) | High vehicle value, battery protection important |
| 3-6 years | Comprehensive or Partial | Depends on residual value, battery still valuable |
| 6-10 years | Partial (Teilkasko) | For theft, fire, animal damage |
| Over 10 years | Liability + maybe Partial | Only if vehicle value is still high |
Important for Leasing: For leased EVs, comprehensive insurance is usually mandatory. Check your leasing company's requirements.
Special EV Rates from Austrian Insurers

How to Save on EV Insurance
1. Compare Specific EV Tariffs
Not every cheap car insurance is optimal for EVs. Look for:
- Battery protection included
- No exclusions for high-voltage components
- Special EV roadside assistance
2. Use Discounts
| Discount Type | Savings | Requirement | |---------------|---------|-------------| | Garage Discount | 5-10% | Regular parking in garage | | Low-Mileage Discount | 10-20% | Under 10,000 km/year | | Multi-Vehicle Discount | 5-15% | Multiple vehicles with same insurer | | Deductible | 15-30% | Higher deductible (€300-500) |
3. Transfer Your No-Claims Bonus
Even when switching from a combustion car to an EV, you can take your no-claims class with you. This also applies when changing insurers.
The Battery: Heart of EV Insurance
The battery is the most expensive component of an electric car. Therefore, battery protection is particularly important:
Battery Insurance: What to Look For
- ✓ Coverage Amount: At least €15,000-20,000
- ✓ Deep Discharge: Should be covered
- ✓ Short Circuit: Should be covered
- ✓ User Error: Check if excluded
- ✓ Warranty vs. Insurance: Check manufacturer warranty (usually 8 years)
Battery: Warranty vs. Insurance
| Aspect | Manufacturer Warranty | Insurance | |--------|----------------------|-----------| | Duration | Usually 8 years/160,000 km | Annually renewable | | Coverage | Capacity loss (usually >70%) | Accident damage, theft, fire | | Deductible | None | Depends on tariff | | User Error | Often excluded | Covered depending on tariff |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is EV insurance more expensive than for combustion cars?
Not necessarily. Liability and comprehensive premiums are often similar or even cheaper (fewer moving parts, less wear). However, since April 2025, the motor-related insurance tax applies, which EVs must now also pay (€300-600/year depending on model).
Do I need special EV insurance?
A "regular" car insurance basically covers EVs. However, you should look for EV-specific coverages: battery protection, animal bite damage to HV cables, charging cable theft. Many insurers offer special EV tariffs.
Is the battery automatically insured?
In comprehensive insurance, the battery is generally covered. However, pay attention to adequate coverage amounts and possible exclusions (deep discharge, user error). Older tariffs may have restrictions – check your policy.
What happens with a battery fire?
Battery fires are covered in comprehensive insurance. However, extinguishing costs for EV fires can be very high (special containers needed). Make sure your insurance has no upper limit for extinguishing costs.
Can I transfer my no-claims bonus from my combustion car?
Yes, your no-claims class is automatically transferred to the new EV – both with the same insurer and when switching. You don't need to apply for anything extra.
