Which insurances you really need - and which you do not

Only third-party car insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht) is legally mandatory in Austria (§ 59 KFG). In practice, personal liability (Privathaftpflicht) and - depending on your living situation - household insurance (Haushaltsversicherung) are highly recommended. A supplementary private health insurance pays off if you want faster access to specialists or hospital comfort care. Other policies (travel, legal, pet, e-bike) are situational - useful but not essential.
This hub gathers our guides on every relevant type of insurance in Austria. We are not a price-comparison portal but an editorial orientation: what each policy really covers, what it does not, and when it makes economic sense. We cite only official sources such as the Austrian Insurance Association (VVO), the Financial Market Authority (FMA), the Chamber of Labour (AK) and the Austrian consumer association (VKI / Konsument).
