Insurance in Austria

Which insurances you really need - and which you do not

Last updated: · Editor: CheckEverything.at Insurance Team

Which insurances make sense in Austria?

Only third-party car insurance (Kfz-Haftpflicht) is legally mandatory in Austria (§ 59 KFG). In practice, personal liability (Privathaftpflicht) and - depending on your living situation - household insurance (Haushaltsversicherung) are highly recommended. A supplementary private health insurance pays off if you want faster access to specialists or hospital comfort care. Other policies (travel, legal, pet, e-bike) are situational - useful but not essential.

Is household insurance mandatory in Austria?

No, it is voluntary. However, your landlord can require it in the lease, and banks usually require it when granting a home loan. Most policies include personal liability cover.

When can I cancel my insurance in Austria?

Most policies run for one year and renew automatically. Standard notice is three months before renewal. Special cancellation rights apply on premium increase or after a claim (§ 41a, § 96 VersVG). Source: RIS, VersVG.

What does insurance cost on average in Austria?

Concrete premiums vary by age, federal state, scope and insurer. Reliable benchmarks come from the annual VVO industry report and the durchblicker.at calculator. Flat statements are unreliable - request an individual quote.

What is the difference between personal liability and household insurance?

Household insurance protects your own belongings (furniture, electronics, clothing) against damage. Personal liability pays when you accidentally cause damage to someone else. In Austria, personal liability is typically bundled inside the household policy.
