Direct Answer

E-bike insurance in Austria covers theft, vandalism, accident damage, natural disasters and electrical defects on motor or battery. Premiums typically run €10 to €35 per month. Pedelecs up to 25 km/h (§ 1 (2) (16) KFG) count as bicycles and need no motor liability cover; S-Pedelecs up to 45 km/h are classified as motor-bicycles under § 2 (1) (14) KFG and require their own motor third-party liability policy.

TL;DR

  • Around 50 e-bikes are stolen daily in Austria according to the Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV).
  • Household insurance usually covers e-bikes only partially – sublimits are common.
  • Pedelec (up to 25 km/h) counts as a bicycle, S-Pedelec (up to 45 km/h) as a motor-bicycle under KFG.
  • Battery, display and accessories are often included, but terms differ per provider.
  • Cost example: roughly €10 to €35 per month for an e-bike valued around €3,000.

E-bikes are valuable and a frequent theft target. The Austrian Road Safety Board (KFV) reports around 50 stolen e-bikes per day in Austria. Dedicated e-bike insurance covers theft, vandalism, accident damage and electrical defects – areas where household policies typically apply only partial cover.

Legal Status: Pedelec vs. S-Pedelec

Under § 1 (2) (16) Austrian Motor Vehicle Act (KFG), pedelecs with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h and a maximum continuous power of 250 W count legally as bicycles – no helmet requirement for adults, no licence plate, no motor liability cover. S-Pedelecs (up to 45 km/h) are motor-bicycles under § 2 (1) (14) KFG: they require a moped licence (AM), a licence plate and a motor third-party liability policy. A pure e-bike property policy does not replace this mandatory liability cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my e-bike covered by household insurance?

Household insurance usually covers e-bikes only to a limited extent – typically at home with low sublimits. For full cover including theft on the road and battery damage, dedicated e-bike insurance is recommended.

How much does e-bike insurance cost in Austria?

Premiums depend on the e-bike value, chosen deductible and coverage area. For an e-bike around €3,000, expect roughly €10 to €35 per month.

Am I also covered abroad?

Depending on the plan, you can choose between cover only in Austria, in neighboring countries, or throughout Europe. Always check the geographic-scope clause in the terms when travelling longer.

What should I do if my e-bike is stolen?

File a police report immediately and notify your insurer promptly. Keep purchase receipt, frame number and the police report ready – without these documents most policies will not pay out.

Does an S-Pedelec need its own motor third-party liability?

Yes. S-Pedelecs with pedal assistance up to 45 km/h are classified as motor-bicycles under § 2 (1) (14) KFG. They require a moped licence, a licence plate and a separate motor third-party liability policy. A pure e-bike property policy does not replace this mandatory cover.
