Short answer

Travel insurance in Austria complements the E-Card with cancellation, medical, accident and luggage cover. Single-trip policies typically cost 3–8 % of the trip price; an annual family policy ranges from around €80–€180 (2025 market data). The Austrian E-Card with EHIC logo covers only "medically necessary" public-system treatment in the EU/EEA and not medical repatriation. The Austrian Foreign Ministry (BMEIA) recommends checking travel advice before booking. Independent comparison is available via durchblicker.at.

At a glance

  • The EHIC/E-Card covers EU/EEA emergency care but not repatriation or rescue costs.
  • Trip cancellation policies usually cost 3–8 % of the trip price; worthwhile for expensive packages.
  • Annual travel insurance becomes cheaper than single-trip cover at around 2–3 trips per year.
  • Travel health cover with repatriation is essentially mandatory outside the EU/EEA.
  • Travel advice: always check the BMEIA travel information before booking and departure.
  • Supervision: Financial Market Authority (FMA). Consumer protection: AK Vienna and VKI/Konsument.

Travel insurance protects you from the financial fallout of having to cancel a trip due to illness, needing medical care abroad, or losing your luggage. Austrian policies are governed by the Insurance Contract Act (VersVG) and supervised by the Financial Market Authority (FMA). This guide explains the main components, where the EHIC/E-Card reaches its limits, and how to choose between single-trip, annual and family policies.

The 6 components of travel insurance

Trip cancellation insurance

Covers cancellation fees if you cannot start your trip for a valid reason (illness, accident, bereavement).

Trip interruption insurance

Reimburses extra costs and unused services if you have to end your trip early.

Travel health insurance

Covers doctor and hospital fees plus medically necessary repatriation to Austria.

Travel accident insurance

Pays out in case of disability or death from an accident on the trip – complements public social insurance.

Travel liability insurance

Covers damages you cause to others while travelling – a complement to your private liability cover.

Luggage insurance

Replaces stolen or damaged luggage including travel documents.

E-Card and EHIC – where the limits are

The Austrian E-Card with the EHIC logo (European Health Insurance Card) gives you access to the public health system across the EU, EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. It does not, however, replace a travel insurance policy.

What the E-Card covers (per ÖGK and BMEIA):

  • Medically necessary treatment at public providers in the EU, EEA, Switzerland and UK
  • Treatment at local tariffs, with local co-payments

What the E-Card does NOT cover:

  • Medical repatriation to Austria (can easily run into five-figure costs)
  • Private hospitals or private clinics
  • Countries outside the EU/EEA (e.g. USA, Türkiye, Western Balkans)
  • Mountain rescue, water rescue, search and helicopter operations
  • Local co-payments and patient contributions

Recommendation: Outside the EU, FMA and VKI consumer protection both treat travel health insurance with medical repatriation as a near-mandatory component.

    Accident before departure
    Death in the immediate family
    Pregnancy complications
    Unexpected loss of employment
Divorce proceedings overlapping the trip dates

    Annual vs. single-trip insurance

    Single-trip insurance

    Pros

    • Cheap for occasional trips
    • Tailored to the trip price
    • No long-term commitment

    Cons

    • More expensive with multiple trips
    • Must be bought before every trip
Recommended: For 1–2 trips per year

    Annual travel insurance

    Pros

    • Cheaper from 2–3 trips a year
    • Automatic cover for every trip
    • Family variants available

    Cons

    • Higher up-front annual premium
    • Rarely worthwhile for a single trip
Recommended: For frequent travellers and families

    Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance mandatory in Austria?

No, it is not legally required. Some third countries (e.g. Schengen visas for non-EU citizens or trips to Cuba) do however demand proof of travel health insurance with a sufficient sum insured.

Is the E-Card enough for travel within the EU?

For medically necessary public-hospital treatment, yes. Private treatment, co-payments and repatriation back to Austria are not covered – the BMEIA explicitly warns about this.

When must trip cancellation insurance be taken out?

Usually within 3 working days of booking or at the latest 30 days before departure. Exact deadlines are set in each provider’s general terms (AVB).

Which sum insured makes sense for travel health cover?

AK and VKI recommend unlimited or at least very high sums for medical costs and repatriation, especially for trips to the USA, Asia or the Western Balkans.

    Are pandemic-related illnesses covered?

Many policies now include pandemic-related illnesses, but some still exclude them. Read the current general terms carefully or ask the provider directly.

Which authorities can help in case of disputes?

The Financial Market Authority (FMA) supervises insurers; AK Vienna and VKI/Konsument support consumers in complaints. For problems abroad, the BMEIA citizens’ service is the first point of contact.
