Austria Highway Tolls 2026
Driving on Austrian motorways (Autobahn) and expressways (Schnellstraße) requires a valid Vignette — either a sticker on the windscreen or a digital pass tied to your number plate. The Austrian motorway operator ASFINAG raised prices slightly for 2026. The table below shows the official rates (VAT included) valid from 1 December 2025:
| Vignette Type | Car (up to 3.5t) | Motorcycle | Validity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Annual Vignette 2026 | EUR 106.80 | EUR 42.70 | 1 Dec 2025 – 31 Jan 2027 |
| 2-Month Vignette | EUR 32.00 | EUR 12.80 | 2 months from purchase |
| 10-Day Vignette | EUR 12.80 | EUR 5.10 | 10 consecutive days |
| 1-Day Vignette | EUR 9.60 | EUR 3.80 | 1 calendar day |

2027 Update: Digital Only
ASFINAG has confirmed that from the 2027 vignette year, only the digital Vignette will be available. After more than 25 years, the classic sticker is being retired. The official reason is the rollout of automatic licence-plate recognition at toll portals and the end of sticker logistics.
What this means for you
- The 2026 sticker is the last of its kind, valid until 31 January 2027.
- From December 2026, the 2027 annual Vignette is digital-only (tied to your licence plate).
- The 18-day cool-off rule for online purchases still applies — except for the 1-day pass, which is valid immediately.
- 2027 prices are expected to be announced in autumn 2026. As of May 2026, no official figures are available.
Digital vs Sticker (while both still exist)
Until the sticker disappears at the end of 2026, both options cost the same. The difference is in convenience, transferability and timing:
| Feature | Digital Vignette | Sticker (Klebevignette) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | identical | identical |
| Where to buy | shop.asfinag.at, app, ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, partner shops | gas stations, tobacco shops, rest stops |
| Valid from | 18 days after purchase* | immediately after applying |
| Vehicle change | 2 times per year, free | not transferable |
| Windscreen replaced | no problem | replacement sticker required |
| Enforcement | licence-plate cameras at toll portals | visual inspection |
*The 18-day rule is based on Austrian consumer-protection law (FAGG), which gives online buyers the right to withdraw within 14 days plus a few days processing buffer. The 1-day digital "instant" Vignette is exempt and works immediately.
Tip for tourists
If you are driving into Austria within the next 18 days, buy the sticker vignette at the border or choose the 1-day digital Vignette — both are valid immediately.
Where to Buy
Digital Vignette
- ASFINAG online shop: shop.asfinag.at — credit card, EPS, Klarna, PayPal
- ASFINAG app "Unterwegs" for iOS and Android
- ÖAMTC / ARBÖ: Austrian auto clubs, online or in branches (no membership required)
- Partner shops and tobacco shops across Austria
Sticker (Klebevignette) — last year 2026
- Gas stations especially near the Austrian borders (D, IT, SK, SI, CZ, HU)
- Tobacco shops (Trafik) found in nearly every Austrian town
- Motorway rest stops along all autobahns
- ÖAMTC / ARBÖ branches — staff can help you apply the sticker
Section Tolls (in addition to the Vignette)
The Vignette is not enough on four mountain and tunnel routes. The following Sondermaut (section toll) prices for cars apply in 2026 (single direction):
| Route | Car (one way) | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| A13 Brenner | EUR 12.50 | Innsbruck → Italy |
| A10 Tauern | EUR 15.00 | Salzburg → Carinthia (Tauern tunnel) |
| A9 Pyhrn (Gleinalm) | EUR 12.00 | Graz → Salzburg |
| A9 Pyhrn (Bosruck) | EUR 7.00 | Styria → Upper Austria |
| S16 Arlberg | EUR 13.00 | Tyrol → Vorarlberg |
| A11 Karawanken | EUR 9.00 | Austria → Slovenia |

Fines for Driving Without a Valid Vignette
If you are caught at an enforcement portal without a valid Vignette, ASFINAG first offers the Ersatzmaut — a flat replacement toll that closes the case immediately. If you refuse or do not respond, the Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde (district authority) opens an administrative procedure under the Federal Roads Toll Act (§ 20 BStMG) with much higher penalties.
Pay the replacement toll — it is almost always the cheaper option
An administrative fine starts at EUR 300 and can reach EUR 3,000.
| Violation | Replacement Toll | If Refused (Fine) |
|---|---|---|
| No vignette (car) | EUR 120 | EUR 300 – 3,000 |
| No vignette (motorcycle) | EUR 65 | EUR 300 – 3,000 |
| Sticker applied incorrectly | EUR 120 | EUR 300 – 3,000 |
| Manipulated vignette | EUR 240 | EUR 300 – 3,000 |
Legal basis: § 19 (2) BStMG (replacement toll), § 20 BStMG (administrative fine). Source: RIS – Austrian legal information system.

FAQ
How much does the annual Vignette cost in 2026?
EUR 106.80 for cars and EUR 42.70 for motorcycles (source: ASFINAG). Valid 14 months: 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2027.
When will the 2027 Vignette be available and how much will it cost?
Expected from 1 December 2026, and it will be digital-only. Official 2027 prices are usually published by ASFINAG in autumn 2026. As of May 2026, the figures are not yet announced.
Are electric cars exempt from the Vignette?
No. The Federal Roads Toll Act does not distinguish by drivetrain. All vehicles up to 3.5 tons need a Vignette, regardless of fuel type.
Do trailers need a separate Vignette?
No. Trailers are covered by the towing vehicle's Vignette. The condition is that the towing vehicle stays below 3.5 tons gross weight.
Can I use the digital Vignette immediately after buying it online?
No. The digital Vignette is valid 18 days after online purchase due to EU consumer-protection rules (FAGG). For immediate use, buy a sticker at the border or choose the 1-day instant digital option.
Can I transfer the digital Vignette to another car?
Yes, twice per vignette year, free of charge. Use the ASFINAG online shop to rewrite the Vignette to the new licence plate. The sticker is not transferable.
What happens if I refuse to pay the replacement toll?
The district authority opens an administrative procedure under § 20 BStMG with fines from EUR 300 to EUR 3,000 — significantly more than the EUR 120 replacement toll. Paying the replacement toll is almost always the cheaper option.
Conclusion
The 2026 Vignette is slightly more expensive than last year — EUR 106.80 for cars, EUR 42.70 for motorcycles. Occasional drivers usually get more value from the 10-day Vignette (EUR 12.80). From December 2026, the sticker is gone for good: the 2027 vignette year starts digital-only.
